November

November sees some interesting movement in the skies. We get a New Moon in Scorpio and a Lunar Eclipse. Venus, Mercury and the Sun change signs. We also see a pretty volatile Mars-Uranus opposition. Here’s what to mark on your calendars for the month ahead.

November 4 – New Moon in Scorpio & Sun-Uranus opposition

The first interesting event of November is the New Moon at 12 degrees of Scorpio at 5:15 pm today.

Scorpio is a sign that doesn’t mess around. It demands depth, courage and willpower. Its energy can produce events that are extremely powerful, totally transforming and can shake you to your core. Scorpio is the sign associated with the occult, sex, joint money, taxes, death and transformation. Should this New Moon make contact with one of your natal planets, it can have a way of making you deal with what you fear the most. If you are able to break free of your fears during this time, the rewards can be great. Harness the power of the New Moon by setting aside a bit of time as close to the New Moon as possible to reflect upon where you are in life today. Then, imagine where you’d love to be. It’s best to focus yourthoughts on the area of life linked to both the sign energy of the New Moon and the house area of your birth chart that the New Moon is energizing.

The catch to this New Moon in Scorpio is that both luminaries are being opposed by Uranus, the planet of sudden insights and breaks. Depending upon where these planets fall in your chart, there could be a sense of a dramatic purge or change—almost as if you’ve been hit by a flash of lightning.

Nov 5 – Venus enters Capricorn & Mercury enters Scorpio

Today Venus leaves behind Sagittarius and enters steady Capricorn. The adventure shifts a bit more into a measured approach, and you may even start thinking about purchasing your holiday gifts early this year with this smarty-pants-organized-as-hell influence!

Also today, Mercury enters intense Scorpio, and communications may become more discreet. Tap into those deep research skills and listen to a true crime podcast or two or three. My students know I’m a hardcore true crime fan, so if you need any recommendations, hit me up here in the comments!

Nov 10 – Mercury conjunct Mars square Saturn

A few difficult aspects permeate today: Mercury gets in the middle of a bust-up between Mars and Saturn which can make for some impatience and frustration if not outright conflict. If you have planets in fixed signs around 7 degrees, you should take special care.

Nov 17 – Mars-Uranus opposition

For those with planets around 11 degrees of the fixed signs (and especially those who have either Mars, Uranus, Saturn or Pluto at one of these degrees) – take special note! I consider this to be an accident aspect; it’s got a feel of sudden, accidental conditions, so please take extra time getting to where you need to be or doing what you need to do.

This Mars-Uranus opposition will be sitting exactly on my natal angular T-square involving Mars, Mercury, Uranus and Saturn essentially forming a Grand Cross in the sky, so I’ve got this day marked on my calendar as “bubble wrap day” although a couple of days before and after are ones to watch as well.

Nov 19 – Lunar eclipse at 27 degrees Taurus

Okay, this is another meh day. It’s a lunar eclipse conjunct the fixed star Algol. Lunar eclipses can be thought of as super charged Full Moons. The fixed star Algol is known as the demon star or Medusa’s head, so not exactly a crowd-pleaser. My most brief and best advice would be to be super cautious of starting anything new within a couple of days of this eclipse and to just take extra care in all that you do this day. Mindfulness can be extraordinarily helpful during difficult astrological backdrops.

Nov 21 – Sun enters Sagittarius

Yay! The Sun enters Sagittarius, and we all get a little boost in enthusiasm. The Sun in fiery Sagittarius sees the glass half full, is always up for adventure and doesn’t subscribe to a “less is more” mentality; rather, it’s associated with abundance. If you’re Sagittarius dominant, you usually meet the world with a wide-eyed can-do attitude. You’re philosophical but easily bored and restless. You’re all about the big picture and hate to be bogged down by details, rules or schedules. Happy birthday Sagittarius!

Nov 24 – Mercury enters Sagittarius

Today our communications go big or go home when Mercury enters Sagittarius.

While the Sun does well in the sign of Sagittarius, Mercury—the planet of reason and communication—struggles a bit in this sign. If you know any Mercury in Sag folks, you’ll know they’re not known for their, um, tact and discretion. If there would ever be a “foot in mouth” award in astrology, Mercury in Sag would win hands down.

See, Mercury does well in signs that are logical, rational, flexible and focused on the message at hand. The Messenger god is conversational but still analytical and pays attention to details. In Sagittarius, the message is boundless, infinite, god-like even. There’s usually a talent for preaching one’s passionate beliefs about… well, almost anything. Yes, there’s an adaptability and fluidity because Sagittarius is a mutable sign after all, but with this comes a lack of brevity and an openness that can confuse the point. Mercury in Sagittarius is a philosopher, student of life and truth-seeker, and we can absolutely admire these traits in them. Keepers of secrets and detail-oriented? Not so much. Tap into the larger-than-life endless optimism for the next several weeks with this influence. (Note that the Sun and Mercury are exactly conjunct on November 28.)

This month’s feature is a classic must have for all astrology lovers:

The Houses: Temples of the Sky by Deborah Houlding

I came to this book probably a bit later than most, but I wish I had read it earlier in my studies. Houlding does such a lovely, clear job illuminating the original associations for each of the twelve houses from a historical perspective. She also describes the houses in terms of horary and mundane astrology considerations. The second half of the book outlines the difficulties of house division and takes a closer look at each of the house systems, and there’s a great glossary of terms at the back.
